When to Add Medical Massage Therapy
to Your Recovery Program

There are many powerful medications and effective surgeries available today to aid recovery from disease, illness and injury and return to enjoy a normal, active life. Medical massage therapy is often an excellent addition to a doctor's treatment plan. Medical massage may also help when medications are not effective or can't be used. Or you may simply prefer to include natural treatments (alternative medicine) in your recovery program.

Prescription for Medical Massage Therapy
Talk with your doctor about including medical massage therapy in your recovery program. Medical massage requires a prescription and referral based on your medical diagnosis and your treatment plan. Locate the Monroe Therapeutic Massage practioners nearest you in your insurance company’s online provider directory. We are preferred providers for many insurance companies including: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Cigna, Regence Blue Shield and First Choice Health.

Benefits of Medical Massage Therapy

  • It's customized to your needs - based on your prescription and how you're feeling. For example, if you're in pain your massage therapist can use light touch massage techniques.
  • It can reduce the cost of your recovery, according to recent studies.
  • It may reduce the amount of medications you need. Massage is a natural pain reliever and increases circulation. Improved circulation gets oxygen and nutrients to the cells for healing and waste removal.
  • Save money on health care. Most insurance companies cover medical massage.
  • It's comfortable. A light lotion is used, rather than oils; choose a female or a male massage therapist; listen to music if you like (even bring your own on compact disc); and you can be partially or fully clothed (your massage may take a little longer if you're fully clothed).

Special Concerns
If you're in a wheel chair or find it difficult to get around you'll appreciate some of the added conveniences at Monroe Therapeutic Massage. Rooms and hallways are spacious and easily accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and crutches. Massage tables are hydraulic and can be lowered and raised to make it easy to get on and off the table.

Always tell your massage therapist if the pressure being used is comfortable. If you are hot or cold the massage table heater and covers will be adjusted for your comfort.
